Chapter One

“Mason, I’ve got the order for table twenty in the window. Vite, S’il Vous plait!” The sound of the head chef’s voice rattled through the air, dragging Mason’s attention back towards the kitchen where the kitchen staff was rushing to get through dinner service. Grumbling as he set down the sandwich he had been nibbling on, he moved back into the overwhelming heat of the kitchen.

“I’m on my break! Where’s Alex?” he demanded, flinching when the robust older man threw a dishtowel at him in frustration.

“Je ne sais pas! He never returned from his lunch, now bring out the Carré d’Agneau to table twenty, maintenant!” The chef Bellowed, the cleaver in his hand glinting threateningly as Mason swore and rushed up to grab the plate.

Grumbling bitterly to himself as he made his way into the lobby, he skirted around a few waitresses with a sigh. This was hardly the kind of hustle and bustle that he had been expecting when he moved to Hollywood.

Mason Blanc was supposed to be the rich actor, eating at one of the long hardwood tables in an upscale restaurant like the one he was currently working in. He was supposed to be dodging the paparazzi, not dodging dirty dishrags thrown at him by angry chefs.

His parents had warned him that this would happen when he chose to move away from his hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico. They told him that getting a job as an actor meant competing with every other up and coming star in the world who also moved to Hollywood to get their start.

Of course, he didn’t listen. As far as he was concerned he was the best actor who had ever lived, and he was going to be a star within days of moving to the big city.

Days quickly dissolved into weeks of failed auditions.

Weeks into Months.

Soon his savings were completely drained, and at the risk of losing his overpriced one-bedroom closet of a loft, he was forced to pick up a job working as a waiter at one of the most popular French restaurants on the West Coast: La Colombe.

It wasn’t the worst job that he’d ever had. The tips were adequate, and he could, at least, pay for his apartment if not much else. He refused to admit defeat even as he started to struggle with making even his most basic of payments.

He kept telling himself that his parents were wrong and that he was going to make it big any day. All he needed was the right audition at the right time, and he would be making his way into the big leagues in no time.

In the meantime, he was just going to have to keep struggling his way in the food service, and pray that one day his dreams might actually come true. One day, his name was going to be up in lights, he just had to bide his time until that point.

Making his way over to table twenty, Mason sighed when he saw the number of rich men and women chatting around the table.
